Canam services were selected for the supply of the structural steel for the renovation of the 543 Yonge Street building located in Toronto, Ontario.

In this existing five-story building, the complete first floor was removed and the basement excavated deeper and underpinned. The entire five stories were shored once the first floor was removed. No crane was used. Instead, a boom lift erected the steel for safety and mobility reasons as to not interfere with the shoring columns. Each piece of steel had to be brought into the building with a forklift and erected with extra care to avoid the temporary columns.

The building was a wood-steel hybrid construction and connections could not be designed until the demolition had progressed, resulting in tight fabrication times. Due to the schedule and the precise nature of maneuvering tall columns through the building, the BuildMaster approach was an obvious choice for the owner and was fully supported by the architect. The deliveries had to be scheduled with minimal quantities sent to enable its erection on the same day, therefore making the site safer and efficient.

For this project, Canam supplied joists and steel deck. Area: 11,500 ft.2 (1,068 m2).
