Construction of Club Med Québec Charlevoix, a hotel complex located in Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, Charlevoix County, Quebec. With a superb view of the St. Lawrence River, it includes 302 rooms on eight floors as well as a massage therapy centre, five restaurants, an indoor swimming pool, a daycare, a ski room, a multi-purpose theatre, a bar and a convention centre with three large rooms.
First North American Club Med village in the mountains, it offers high-end all-inclusive holidays with recreational activities at Le Massif de Charlevoix.
Engineering and steel structure erection challenges
This three-storey building required a great deal of engineering skill in both the design and construction stages. Amongst these, a double cantilever structure on two levels, partially supported by a plate girder (WWF) weighing almost 10 tons, required increased coordination between the steel erector and the structural engineer to ensure that the erection was done safely, but also to size each of the components properly.
Over 1,000 joists were manufactured for this project, many of which were assembled in multiple sections due to the construction sequences and geometric constraints imposed.
Charlevoix: a risky region
The Charlevoix region is one of the most penalizing regions in Canada regarding seismic loads. The optimization of the lateral force resistance system was a global issue given the size of the complex and the three-level construction.
