Description

Construction of the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre (Canada Games) building located in St. Catharines, Ontario where the highest level of national amateur sport competition will take place for thousands of Canadian athletes.

Features

Complex joist girders

This project required joist girders of great complexity with a wide variety of shapes.

  • 11 cantilever trusses
  • 12 balcony trusses

The cantilever trusses included several angled (non-standard) members that had to be installed in the right places.

A curved hollow square section (HSS) had to be installed in parallel, for the balcony trusses, following a particular curve radius.

Challenges for steel deck

The design, detailing and fabrication of the steel deck have proven to be quite challenging. A wide variety of shear forces for the deck fasteners, different roof pitches and a sloped green roof system with shear brackets passing through the deck had to be considered.

Area: 207,904 ft.2 (19,315 m2)
