First LEED® Platinum Building in Canada

On October 23 in Ottawa, the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the Canadian Consulting Engineering magazine held the annual Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards ceremony. The Vancouver Convention Centre West project received the Award of Excellence in Sustainability Consulting and LEED® Platinum Project Management.

The centre achieved LEED® version 4 and the highest award level, which is Platinum, becoming Canada’s first LEED® Platinum certified existing building.

Canam provided the steel structure, the joists and steel deck as well as the engineering drawings for this remarkable project built over land and water.

The commitment towards green technology can be found in every corner:

  • green roof
  • heating
  • cooling
  • on-site water treatment
  • fish habitat built into the foundation

“This is a project that exemplified how enhancements to existing sustainability measures are possible to achieve higher LEED recognition,” the jury mentioned1.

The Awards of Excellence are given to members of the ACEC who reached the highest level of excellence in terms of engineering quality, innovation and benefits to society as a whole.
