This 207,904-square foot (19,315-square meter) building includes 1,150 tons of steel components (joists, joist girders, steel deck and beams) and will be hosting the games scheduled to take place from August 6 to 21, 2022 in the Niagara Region.

Many challenges
The design, detailing and fabrication of the steel deck have proven to be quite challenging. A wide variety of shear forces for the deck fasteners, different roof pitches and a sloped green roof system with shear brackets passing through the deck had to be considered.

Fabrication of complex components
This project included, among others, 11 cantilever trusses and 12 balcony trusses, all different.

Their shapes are unique. The cantilever trusses required several angled chords while curved hollow square section (HSS) had to be installed in parallel on the trusses for the balconies.

The challenge back at the plant was to ensure the chords were installed at the right places according to the non-standard angles or following a particular curve radius.

Delays out of our control
Construction on the Canada Games Park site began in December 2019 in preparation for the opening of the games in the summer of 2021. Due to the pandemic, the opening was delayed until 2022, however construction continued with some delays due to critical security restrictions at the site.
